Chapter Nineteen: A Deal That Isn't There
Norbert considered him for a moment, started to speak then hesitated, tried to respond then paused again. In truth, he does not know what to say. This deal has been made for so long, for so long that he still remembers the pain, the indecision, the treachery, and greed that surrounded it that it pierced his heart reminiscing the tough times. It was very difficult.
He knew all about the treaty, every detail of it. It was drawn for the sake of peace, and they have no upper hand in the negotiations. It had repercussions they have no intention of surrendering. But there it is. The treaty has been accepted. It was ratified, and implemented without saying any further.
The Dwarves were known to be neutral on every occasion. Even before the last days, when the Scientific Council and Literary Committee were fighting for domination, history is on the side of the dwarves. They knew what is at stake, and they needed both support of the opposing forces.
And yet, there are painful moments, defining events that determine our future. Courage becomes a victim when taking sides. It becomes uncertain. We knew who we are but decisions means giving up something. And sometimes, we are forced to do something we must not do. In this process, our hearts become a victim too.
Now, the Chief of the Dwarves is faced by a similar situation and he can never be more afraid, reassuring his courage every now and then. Now is another defining moment.
