Chapter 221: Leverett & Yard
He has no idea what was going on, although he took some science courses in his pre-law at Stanford University to know better about what was possible and what was not in today's technological advancement. A fullness of knowledge that will enable him to process reasoning from arguments, against possibility or fictitious nature of the events.
But there he is in his chair, having been promoted recently as Senior Partner of Leverett & Yard, the leading law firm in the country. He had a lot of experience arguing for Corporate America, controversial cases before appellate courts, including cases involving constitutionality before the United States Supreme Court.
It was not his skill as litigator that he questions himself with, for he knew how he did at Harvard Law enough to be promoted to his present position. He has just experienced the greatest mystery he ever saw in his life, and he thinks he is going crazy.
It came as a flickering light at first; it was so satisfying (and terribly scary) to watch that he almost thought he was dreaming. Something materialized out of the small dot of lights against the blackness of space. Within seconds, it formed into the body of a woman, who was dressed like someone who was obviously from the future.
"Do not scream," she said at once when she saw the shock from the face of the lawyer. "I work for the United States government from the future."
The lawyer just nodded.
"I came here for one reason: you must question the constitutionality of the Destiny Commission before the United States Supreme Court; that is if you want this country to be safe in the future."
There was a nod again.
"You do not need to win this case, you understand? You just needed to create a controversy to expose a secret plan that will kill the most talented scientists in the country. Three days from now, your client will come. You will handle that case, and you need to do your job convincingly. You understand?"
He nodded his assent.
"Here are the documents you will need."
