Chapter 240: The Department of the Past

We are now in the future. The United States has become even more powerful from its previous position in world affairs, mainly owing to its scientific endeavors and technological advancements that propelled a modern society, whether within the country or outside its borders. It was a period of tranquility and peace from where they are in the future, and the challenge now for this newly-evolved civilization is to maintain the essence of their humanity, which has become increasingly difficult to do in the era of robotics and automation.

The downside of the technological progress that happened from centuries ago is that many of the characteristics that has once defined humanity has slowly became obsolete. Suddenly, humanity began to forget who he was, there was no understanding of himself; he has become a willing slave of the many algorithms and artificial intelligence. It was as if humans cannot live without the increasingly dependence on robots and technological devices, several of them, for a well-functioning and orderly society.

The clamor to change this dire situation was the focal point for debates in many places and instances, but while there is general consensus on its ethical ramifications, the population still maintains that using this process to initiate change is essentially necessary. The time machine must be put into use.

The present administration of President George Theodore Carter has introduced a legislation to create a Department of the Past to replace the now useless Department of Hope, and it has immediately gained traction in the political sphere.

There has been no signs discovered that Heaven do, in fact, exist, despite diligent efforts of the Department of Hope. The errors of the past and dependence on false beliefs made a complete fools out of themselves. That while humanity is searching for better ways of doing things, they had gone painfully astray from their lingering souls in the process. The Department of Hope's statutory mission has failed immensely, and it is now time to rectify that mistake.

The Department of the Past will focus on travelling back, with the intention of rectifying bad decisions made by the previous generations to correct its effects in the present and in the future to come. These time travels will be carried out by elite agents, and has to be done carefully to avoid fatal mistakes that will render future society useless. It is a delicate operation, indeed, and the past is not a laughing thing to change.
